Our Senior Policy Advisor and former U.S. Congressman, Bob Goodlatte, explains in Tech Policy Press why it’s necessary to protect encryption, which ensures that emails, texts, and other communications are kept private between sender and receiver. The world currently faces numerous cybersecurity threats, and every piece of data from medical records to trade secrets is a potential target. Encryption not only protects industry, but it also protects journalists from malevolent governments and victims from their abusers. Yet the UK has chosen to pursue a disastrous policy of attacking encryption and the privacy it enables by requiring Apple to facilitate wiretapping of its users - even those that are, like the company, outside of the UK. The US government shouldn't be complicit in this power grab by continuing to give the UK authority to enforce surveillance orders against US tech companies, as it currently does under the 2017 CLOUD Act.
