One of the brighter spots in the effort to reform Section 215 – the provision that gives the government easy access to some of our most personal information held by businesses – came at 1 PM when President Trump retweeted Rep. Jim Jordan, “Now is our chance to fix it.” In these seven words, the president definitively broke with Attorney General Barr, who wanted a “clean” or unreformed extension of Section 215. It places the president squarely in the camp of bipartisan leaders from Rep. Zoe Lofgren to Rep. Jordan, from Sen. Mike Lee to Sen. Patrick Leahy.
Lindsey Graham, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, supports a short-term extension to extend debate. All good news – as long the extension stays short. The House and Senate need to wrap up this measure before the distraction of the coming elections kicks into full gear. Comments are closed.
